Prints from the Pink City

Jaipur, in India is known as the Pink City. It all started with the visit of Queen Victoria’s son Prince Albert who visited this city in 1876. Pink is a colour associated with hospitality and as the people of this part of India are known for their amazing hospitality, the ruling King of Jaipur had the whole city painted pink to welcome to the visiting royal! It is said that Prince Albert gave the term Pink city to Jaipur.

Floral Print Clothes from The Pink City

Jaipur is a centre for many artisan made crafts especially block printing. At Artful House, our block printed fabrics are made in Jaipur and we thought it befitting that we should design prints from the Pink City inspired by this colour.

Pink City Jaipur : Hawa Mahal

City Palace Jaipur

There are many buildings old and new in different shades of pink in the city. Our top picks are the Hawa Mahal and the City Palace.

City Palace is a favourite not just because of its beautiful pink walls but the myriad spots within the complex that are a design lover’s dream come true. We love the four gates in this complex that represent different seasons. Rose gate and Peacock Gate being our absolute favourites.

PRO TIP: Most tours tend to take visitors to the main complex only. Visiting Chandra Mahal (Moon Palace) within this complex entails an additional charge and is quite steep at that but we found it well worth the spend. Chhavi Niwas housed in the Chandra Mahal has our heart and at Artful House we have had many collections both in home décor and in fabric inspired by this striking blue and white interior.

Jaipur need not be only about grand palaces and monuments. Some of the best experiences are inexpensive but priceless at the same time. We recommend taking an early morning trip to the Flower Market. This fascinating place is an endless source of inspiration for us.  Our latest midi features beautiful marigolds which are a reminder from this visit.

Another low budget but authentic activity to do is explore craft lanes in the walled city. Maniharon ka Rasta, a lane dedicated to shops selling lac bangles is our favourite. (Manihar is a term that refers to local craftsman who make the lac bangles and Rasta means path). You can still find the artisans here who will resize a lac bangle for you on the spot. It’s fascinating to watch ( See our Video below)

If you visit Jaipur or anywhere in the world really, we hope you wear one of our cotton maxis, midis, minis or any piece from our collection with its prints hand crafted in this Pink City. Our dresses and other clothes are just perfect for travel and we'd love to see a picture of you wearing them!
